REPORT 2011/2012

ARCHBISHOP MIHAYO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF TABORA (AMUCTA)
A CONSTITUENT COLLEGE OF SAUT

REPORT OF THE UN-CHAPTER AMUCTA 2011/2012
UN CHAPTER – AMUCTA, is the CHAPTER found in TABORA-TANZANIA at Archbishop Mihayo university college of Tabora, as one of the constitute colleges of SAUT.
The Birth of this chapter was from the womb of UN-CLUB, whereby GIDEON AYUBU who was a member UN CLUB when he was in A-level sec school, came up with the idea of establishing the chapter at AMUCTA. Later on the idea was supported by his colleague students, MLAWA ALOYCE, NELSON JOSEPH and MGAO ERICK. These four students worked as a team to educate other students and the university administration on the need to start the operations of the UN CHAPTER AMUCTA. This was motivated by the slogan “Volunteerism is our spirit”. These people volunteered much both in time and finances until the UN CHAPTER AMUCTA was registered at the university college level and National level, (YUNA TANZANIA)
On 02/06/2011, a democratic election was conducted so as to get the pioneer Chapter leaders; whereby 38 founder members participated in elections exercise. The following were elected as the leaders of the Chapter:
            CHAIR PERSON            :                 GIDEON AYUBU
            VICE CHAIRPRSON       :               RICHARD ERODASTER
            SECRETARY                 :                  JAMES ANTONIA
            VICE CHAIRPRSON       :               SITTA JACOBO
TREASURER                 :                  MWANZAGI SITTI
INFORMATION OFFICER:            MLAWA ALLOYCE
HEAD OF PROJECT        :               OBED EDWINE
The first task of leaders was to find a patron of the CHAPTER. They successfully convinced MR. ALFRED M. ONG’ANG’A, a lecturer at AMUCTA, who accepted the request and become the patron of the UN CHAPTER AMUCTA.
The leadership played a greater role to ensure that the UN CHAPTER AMUCTA, took a tremendous growth through proper coordination of various activities pertinent to the chapter. This was accomplished in liaison with other UN Chapter stakeholders found within Tabora Municipality in designing and implementation of the various programs such as raising funds, promoting awareness of the Chapter’s existence and activities so as to create strong association.

The other achievement of the association was to officially launch and inaugurate the UN Chapter AMUCTA at our university college.
Since UN Chapter AMUCTA started, it has made the following achievements:
1.      We have had successful meetings where all members meet and discuss various issues such as holding debates, discussions on different matters relating to MDGs, and many other crucial issues affecting the youth.
2.      We have had committed and dedicated leadership and an active patron.
3.      The members have managed to establish tree nursery planting program on a piece of land provided by the university administration. This program is progressing well and we are optimistic that it will go a long way in generating income for the Chapter. This, we hope, will enable us to contribute to improvement on our immediate environment.
4.      The members have succeeded in publicizing the activities of the UN Chapter within Tabora District.
5.      We have also established an effective network with the regional and district government officers such as the Tabora DC and the RC, whom we paid an official visit on 9th January, 2012.
6.      We have also opened and operationalized a UN Chapter, AMUCTA email; unchapter_amucta@yahoo.com and an active Facebook account http://www.facebook.com/unchapteramucta and a blog account                                    http://un-chapteramucta.blogspot.com
7.      Participating in Radio programs, so as to easily reach the university’s surrounding community. For instance on 1/12/2011 ‘World AIDS Day”, 8/03/2012 “World Women Day”. Seven members participated  in the radio program at VOT FM (Voice of Tabora)
8.      Sending delegate (5) to the National meeting relating to UN activities, e.g. on 1/12/2011 World AIDS day, the meeting held at Rombo Green View Hotel at Dar es salaam.
9.      Increasing the number of members rapidly, from 38 on 2/06/2011 to 88 in March 2012. This shows the extent of the awareness about UN issues and activities that has reached the youth within the AMUCTA community.
10.  Establishment and sustenance of a cordial relationship with the university administration which has resulted in getting moral support.
11.  Practical participating in the implementation of HIV/AIDS to three (3) zero program: zero discrimination, zero new infection, zero AIDS related diseases. This has been done through a number of programs including radio, field, active debating and discussion about it, e.g. we visited HAPO centre found in Tabora.
12.  Also UN CHAPTER AMUCTA has played a greater role in the establishment of UN clubs and UN CHAPTER in the region. For example, we helped to establish UN clubs in IPULI SEC SCHOOL and UNCHAPTER at Tabora Teacher Training College (TTC).  Later on the campaign was highly supported by the UNIC outreach programme in Tabora during which about 15 UN CLUBS were opened.
13.  Following the UN – Calendar of events, where by the UNCHAPTER has been designing different programs based on the events themselves.
14.  Financially, the chapter has managed to run its various activities independently without any external support. The chapter relied on funds from members’ registration fee, monthly contributions and contributions from individual well-wishers.
15.  The UN CHAPTER AMUCTA, has managed to have a shelf of books in the university’s library, where different UN publications are placed so all students and members and non members have access to  read, and become and aware about the UN and its activities . This has made the UN CHAPTER AMUCTA to be well known to about 80%.
16.  Inauguration of the UNCHAPTER  AMUCTA on 18/03/2012  which involved all the UN CHAPTER  members, members of the university administration, university students,  representatives from UN clubs in Tabora Municipality secondary schools and other youth groups.

CHALENGIES:
Since the Chapter was established it has faced the following challenges:
1.      Inadequate finances which has led to failure to participate and succeed in some important events and programs Example: Many of our activities are operated in town center only and not in rural.
2.      Shortage of working facilities, e.g. Computer, Printer, Scanner and a camera.

WAY FORWARD
There is need  to ensure that UN Chapter AMUCTA remains to be the initiator  toward  the success of UN programs in helping youth of Tabora community at large through the following:
a.       To expand the scope of activities to reach the whole of Tabora region e.g. Urambo, Uyui, Nzega, Sikonge and Igunga.
b.      To promote networking & cooperation with other UN CHAPTERS, UN CLUBS, and other youth organization in our Tabora and National at large.
c.       To ensure that UN CHAPTER AMUCTA, remains alive and to serve the youth in the university college and Tabora community at large. This can only be achieved through the support from the national office, YUNA- TANZANIA, UN organs at other stake holders.
